Spinning Up: Front Row Seats to All The Stuff You Love

Tumblr is a great way to discover and keep up with new things you’ll love.

Your Dashboard is where it’s at. All of the posts from the blogs you follow, as well as posts from other blogs that you might like show up in your Dashboard. You can use your keyboard to quickly move between posts, Like, and Reblog. You can do a lot on the Dashboard, so we’ll start with the basics.

Follow some blogs!

There are tons of ways to discover blogs. In fact, you may already know of a few blogs you like and want to follow. To follow those blogs, simply visit them and click the “Follow” button in the top-right corner. When you return to your Dashboard, you’ll see posts from that blog.

Finding more blogs to follow that you may not know about is just as easy. In your Dashboard, on the right side, there’s a button that says “Find Blogs”. This will take you to the Spotlight. This is the home to all of the best blogs to follow for any topic that you’re in to.

Finding More Stuff You Love!

Not seeing anything that interests you? Don’t worry. By entering a phrase or name in to the Search area on the top-right of your Dashboard, you’ll see tons of related posts and suggestions for relevant blogs. Use the Search feature to find and follow awesome blogs! If you want to keep tabs on the tags you search, you can track them.

Like Things!

Now that you’ve got a Dashboard full of awesome stuff, you’ll probably like a way to hang on to the posts that really catch your eye. By clicking the Like button in the top-right corner of a post, you add it to your Likes. You can view your Likes by clicking the Liked button in the right side of your Dashboard. Here, you can check out all of the posts you’ve liked.

If you connect your Tumblr with your Facebook account, you can (optionally) automatically share the posts you Like to your Facebook Timeline.

You’ve got a great Dashboard with stuff you love, and you can keep on finding more great blogs to follow - to keep things fresh.

If for some reason, you ever want to stop following a blog, you can visit your Following page and manage your blogs there.

Here’s a hidden feature that shipped in Monday’s Tumblr for iOS update. You can now prefix a URL in Mobile Safari with tm to easily create a link post in the Tumblr app.

If you’re into bookmarklets, you can save yourself the trouble of typing tm and bookmark the following JavaScript instead:

Everyone, I’m elated to tell you that Tumblr will be joining Yahoo.

Before touching on how awesome this is, let me try to allay any concerns: We’re not turning purple. Our headquarters isn’t moving. Our team isn’t changing. Our roadmap isn’t changing. And our mission – to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve – certainly isn’t changing.

So what’s new? Simply, Tumblr gets better faster. The work ahead of us remains the same – and we still have a long way to go! – but with more resources to draw from.

Yahoo is the original Internet company, and Marissa and her team share our dream to make the Internet the ultimate creative canvas. I couldn’t be more excited to have her help. We also share a vision for Tumblr’s business that doesn’t compromise the community and product we love. Plus both our logos end with punctuation!

As always, everything that Tumblr is, we owe to this unbelievable community. We won’t let you down.

Tumblr tip for webcomic artists!

Deep into your eyes.

A great comic can lose its chance at being popular if it is presented poorly. When creating your comics, always assume that no one will click to enlarge your images. You must present your comic so it is clearly viewed on the dashboard. You can make it high resolution, but be sure that the text is easily read and the detail in the images is not lost at 500 pixels wide.

Instead of orienting your comic horizontally, do it vertically. If you exceed more than 2 panels, make another image and create a photoset. With the new photoset system, you can stack up to ten images vertically. Just drag the images until you have a horizontal blue line to stack them. Owlturd is a great example of how to properly present your comics. It is easily consumed without any enlargement.

Making sure your comic is easily visible at 500 pixels wide will ensure that you get the maximum amount of notes and reblogs possible. Always save your comics as a draft and inspect it before you publish. If anything looks hard to make out, adjust it. If you post your comic on another site and it is horizontally oriented, consider splicing up the panels and creating a vertical version for tumblr.

I am seeing way too many comics that are 4 panels wide and the text is so tiny it cannot be made out without enlargement. Many people will scroll right on by and never look at your comic. Please don’t make this mistake. I want all artists on tumblr to get the attention they deserve.

ATTN: fantastic theme developers!

Tumblr users can now interact with posts straight from the blog index and permalink pages on your theme! This is super exciting news! Previously blog visitors could only like or reblog posts through the controls in the corner of post permalinks.

All you have to do is incorporate our new Like and Reblog buttons anywhere in your design — we’ll take care of the rest.

If you’ve been using other methods to add this functionality to your themes, you’ll need to update to the latest code. Visit our updated Theme Developers documentation for more information.

Since we like to stay on our toes here at Tumblr Support, we did a little office reorganization and wanted to share some photos!

The New Photosets

Our new post forms offer an easy way to create Photosets. When you click photo post, you can pull images from a URL (note the word URL at the bottom of the photo area), drag and drop photos from your computer, or click the add photo icon to access your image files.

The drag and drop makes creating these posts so much easier than the click, click, clicking we had to go through with the old post form.

And reordering them is easier, as well. Just grab a photo and place it where you’d like.

Hover over an image to add a caption.

Add a note for your followers and tags so your amazing photos can be discovered by other users.

And preview, save, or publish your amazing work!

We’re really excited about this new form. If you find anything acting odd or not working as expected, please let us know.

Reblogging and the New Post Forms

As many of you know, Tumblr is implementing a new post form which allows us to post and reblog content the same way we’re reading it. With the new forms, however, a lot of things have moved around a little, and there have been a lot of questions about the “Reblog As” feature in particular.

When you reblog a long Text post, we default to truncating the content and reblogging it as a Link post, linking back to the original Text Post. In a lot of situations this helps prevent your follower’s Dashboards from being dominated by walls of text, but sometimes you still want to reblog the entire content. You can still do this in the new post forms.

This is a large text post, the first one encountered on the #Politics tag. First, I’m going to try to reblog it.

As you can see, the content is truncated, and the post type becomes a Link (you can see the icon in the upper right corner, beside the gear). To change this back, click that Link icon.

You will then be given the option to change your post type into a Text, Link, or Quote post. I’ll be switching this reblog back to the original Text post.

And there you have it. When I hit “Reblog post” the post will appear just as it did in the original content, with any additional commentary I’ve included.

No accounts have been compromised, and you don’t need to take any further action.

Hey everyone! I have an exciting and slightly overwhelming milestone to share with you:

Tumblr has broken into the Top 10 sites in the U.S., and now has a worldwide audience of 170 million people.

This isn’t meant to be a brag – though you should definitely try our new Android and iOS apps if you haven’t yet – but a credit to all of your brilliant creative efforts. You guys have earned an audience bigger than the biggest TV networks, and you continue to make some of the most thought provoking, insightful, inspiring, funny, diverse, and compelling content being created today.

It is truly a privilege to build products for you, and we are humbled every day by all the amazing ways you use them.

Scratch that: I anxiously published this post this morning, not sure if we would hold on to the #10 spot when the rankings refreshed this afternoon.

Turns out the holiday pushed us to #9! :)

And supporting all these users is an honor as well. Thanks for making Tumblr so successful!

Five years ago Marc convinced David to give him the keys to the support email. Yesterday, we said goodbye to Marc. He’s off on a new adventure.

The greatest proof of performance is what others say about you and your work. Marc was showered with stories, gratitude, and well wishes yesterday. There was no question about his performance. Nor about the legacy he is leaving with Tumblr Support.
